OK, It's been a while since I've had to do this and I can't figure out how.
As a second to last resort when Winblows doesn't start, I use the install disk to install over itself and repair the installation. I thought I did this in the past by pressing "R" - now when I press "R" I get the recovery console which I don't know how to use and have never had to use before. Anyone know how to get it to install over itself as a repair and not a clean install? It's winblows XP Corp (VLK) and I have a valid VLK

Right - I've managed to fix it by copying over some registry files whilst in the Repair Console DOS Box.

That would be "valid" as oppose to "genuine"?
![]() ![]() I realise that you have sorted your problem Lincsat but perhaps you were thinking of System File Checker? This compares the current installation of Windows with the original installation, any system files which are different are copied over from the Windows CD. From memory the command is C:\ SFC\scannow (from a dos window). |

It's a genuine, valid VLK
![]() When I've had problems in the past, I put the install disk in and select the option to repair the installation, it then does an Upgrade installation. This time, that option wasn't available, I only had the Repair Console or full (new) install options. It seems that on a reboot, scandisk had decided to run and randomly delete some files (like it does sometimes). It had deleted some registry files, so I had to manually copy some backups over in the Repair Console DOS Box.

[QUOTE=lincsat;104043]It's a genuine, valid VLK
![]() OK fair enough ![]() Actually for anyone who wants to run system file checker I put mixed up my forward / backslash commands, to run sfc: type cmd in the run box, in the dos window that opens type: c:\ sfc/scannow (then hit enter) It can take a while for windows to check all system files are ok but it has done the job for me in the past. |
