No - if your area still supports forced configs, you tell your Modem to force that config and it downloads it from the ISP's TFTP server.

Some area's do not support forced configs or use random file names, with them you can only get the speed allocated to the MAC you're using.

ah ok,, so its likely forced configs are on the way out...
so would I be right in thinking that I can clone a MAC address from a neighbour,, but it will not be able to be in the same UBR zone as each UBR zone is like its own subnet, meaning that there cannot be 2 of the same MAC addresses?

That's about right, your neighbour will most likely be on the same UBR as you. You may need to go a couple of miles away.

does anyone know how to get into the console when flashing 250 or 255 modem? i press "p" to get to the menu but error message says "console disabled by vendor", i think there is a way round it by lifting the chip and downgrading it to a v2 as it is on a v3 now but i dont have a reader/lifter any help is gladly appreciated thanks

Apparently you can get to the JTAG points, but you need to grind a hole in the PCB - not a job for someone with a shaky hand
