total newb

Hi I am a total newb.
I am computer literate but have no idea about cable.
I am willing to read and learn but dont know which bit to read.
I bought a chipped cable box but am fed up driving 30 miles each way and paying a tenner each time my box dies so thought I would try and learn how to reactivate myself.
I think my box is a Pace4000. It is deffo pace and model on bottom says Di4000-N
The card is an NTL one.
Read somewhere that I needed code which could be found ontop of scart socket in box. I found a 16 digit code starting with 57D does that sound right??
Bloke who chips has writen A.U.M.7.12.6 on back of box (dont know if this is his private code or in general use)
He has written A.U.M.7.12.6-STORED on the card and AX2 aswell.
Ok if someone could let me know which tut to read I would be greatfull.
