Default newbie...flat plate antenna behind glass

this might sound like a dumb question....but i dont care jojo isnt my real name

I live in a ground floor flat (2 story building) & absolutely cannot put a dish outside as the freeholder wont even allow burglar alarms on his beautiful building.
So i was thinking about buying one of the flat antenna, & sticking it to the inside of my window....I am pretty confident my window would need to point exactly towards a bird? how do i go about calculating the angle of reception?
the only channels i really want are discovery & national geographic etc & found this page TV Cabo on Hispasat 1C/1D at 30.0°W - LyngSat
so thought i could get that somehow.

thanks

Hi, Welcome to the forum.

Yes,I think it is possible use a satellite antenna through glass.
A dish would work just as well, and it the window would does not have to face exactly the right direction.
Multimo dish

To work out the angle the dish needs to be at, one of the dish pointing calculators in this sticky can be used.
Dish Setup - Angle Calculators

TV Cabo is on 30W, so if you were near London, the dish would be pointed 30 degrees west of true south.

TV cabo is a portuguese Satellite TV package and is scrambled in nagravision3. At the moment,to receive it I believe a TV Cabo dedicated receiver and a subscription to their service is required

That is because the forum software doesn't allow live links until you make more than 10 posts. They have to be manually aproved.

By the way,
That channel on 5E is no longer in the clear, it was probably a glitch by the broadcaster concerned. It is encrypted in PowerVU.

Some double glazed windows have a thin copper coating on the glass, to cut down heat loss from the room. That could attenuate or even block out the signal from the satellite.

Would you be allowed to knock a couple of fence posts into the ground outside the building? If so bolt the dish to that instead. Perfectly acceptable as a dish mount if they are knocked in far enough.

You dont even need to drill holes in the property if you use a piece of flat coax from Maplin which slides under a window or round a door..

i think its either going to be a digicube or the flat pannel antenna.

1 question though, does the flat antenna always need to be on its point? can i not mount it along its edge, so it just takes 1 perfect square of my window.
& if anyone has one.... it'll definately work through dbl glazing? (i donno about that copper coating)
this is certainly the best option especially if i want to switch birds, cause it'll be in the next room. the digicue would involve a 5 min walk round the building to get to the grass 3feet under my window

oh & i cant errect anything outside (i'd be installing the digicube in disguise, painted black with additional mud behind some bushes). so the digiglobe is out (and its about the size of a small planet anyway)

thanks

I don't understand this. Could you post a picture of what this thing looks like?

Edit:

Got it now, is it like this?:-
kathreinbas60.jpg

I would imagine that it has to be used pointy bit down(ish)as the LNB is integrated. If turned 45 degrees the skew would be all wrong for both Horizontallly and vertically polarised signals.
The whole thing is twisted to adjust for skew, and elevation will require adjustment by tilting it.
So basically its orientation will depend on which satellite it is pointed at.

The manual for the one pictured can be downloaded from here:-
