Hi everyone, I desperately need help. I have a linksys wireless router. I was connecting to the office from my home through the router with my laptop wirelessly. I noticed that my network was unsecure, I tried to secure it with WEP. I follow instructions to the T (mostly). I could then get to the internet but not my office. I then did a live chat with linksys support. We made some changes on the routher and the laptop. Did not fix the problem. I have changed the router settings back where I think they were originally, I still cannot connect to the office. I do have internet access. I also made other changes to the router but can not remember all of them. I pretty sure that the settings are back to the way they were originally.
When I originally got the laptop it was configured by our IT guy so all I had to do was click a short cut icon to connect to the office after I had internet access. The laptop is running XP the router is a linksys wrt54g v-8. Thank you in advance for any help. |

I forgot to mention that I have the logs from my chat with linksys support if they would be helpful. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum ikkyu. If you can get onto the internet but not connect to your office then it is almost certainly being blocked at your office end.
How are you trying to connect, http, ftp? Do you still have the shortcut so that you can see what security was installed?

Hi Jimdefruit,
Thank you for your reply. I think I'm connecting http. I still have the shortcut. When I right click the Icon and go to properties, I see a virus property tab. On the general tab there is a text box at the top that says Remote Desktop Connection. When I click the advanced button at the bottom 2 checkboxes are checked. One says "file is ready for archiving" the other says " For fast searching, allow Indexing Service to index this file" On the shortcut tab the Target textbox has "%SystemRoot%\System32\Mstsc.exe The Startin: textbox has %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH% On the compatibility tab nothing is checked. The connection to the office computer was fine until I changed settings on my router, so I'm pretty sure( but not 100%) that it is not being blocked at the other end. Thanks again for your reply |

Have you tryed the reset button on the linksys wrt54g,it's at the back ''you will see a little hole ''you need a pen to pust the reset button'' hold it down for around 5 secs.
it will then reset the box to the defaults,,then excess your router by web page and type in 192.168.1.1 hope that helps,,then go to the security settings ''put in password'' click on generate,,then you should see key 1 ? now that is your password,,apply and the box will restart..you then need to put in the password in your laptop for your wireless connection,,,sometimes you have to click on repair and get a new ip address. hope you understand ''took me ages to learn'' now i can do it with out thinking :-) |

darchiuk,
Thank you for your reply. I have tried to reset it just as you said. I can still get to the internet but not to the office computer. I think I will just go ahead and admit defeat and look like a goofball to the IT department. I'm getting read to send them an email now. I will post back with all of the details about what is done(if they tell me.) I hope they do, I'd like to learn as much about this as I can. Thanks again P.S. I understood what you were explaining. You stated it very well. I learn something new every day. |

Its sound more like the port need forwarding via the router to allow the connection.
When you connect to your office it might send information back on a certain port. If that port is closed then the router will not allow the information to enter your home network so ur laptop will not recieve the confirmation of connection from the office. From what I can tell from what you have posted .. the port u need to open it for REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION. I think it's port 5900 but dont hold me to it. Someone else might be able to correct me if I have got it wrong. Hope this helps. |

Go and talk to your IT guys - if you dont want to look like a goofball then tell them you had a mains power fluctuation and it hasnt worked since

Analoguesat, I like your suggestion. I can even use that at home when I screw the home computer up trying to mess with things I shouldn't. My wife gets ticked when the computer is down. Thanks |
