Hi madd71,
it all depends on your budget, location and where you can position your dish. You are allowed up to a 1 metre dish, without the need for planning permission, in most of the UK, and a motorised 1 metre dish will give you lots of viewing options. For maximum options, you could do with being able to view from 45E to 45W, with a clear line of site to these satellites. An easy way to work out satellite positions is by locating a S*y mini dish, these point at 28.2 degrees East, so move 28.2 degrees west, to your right if standing behind the dish, and you have South. As for receivers there are a lot of options, depending on your budget and general expertise, from cheap patchable receivers to linux based receivers that can do a lot when connected correctly. Have a read through ther satellite for beginners section, work out a budget and post back with any questions. |

Hi madd, I dont think you will ever regret changing to satellite. The choice of channels is enormous and very varied. Many times more than you will ever get on cable.
If you just want to stick with UK channels then a single fixed dish and a digi box with a free to view card will get a lot. If you want to explore the continental channels then you will need to decide whether to go for a multi lnb dish or a motorised dish. There are pros and cons to each.
