Default Newbie needs some help

I am new to all this and seeking advice on how to upgrade my Dad's current set-up. He currently has an old Echostar 2510IP VA with a H2H 36v motorised dish.

Speaking to a few people it seems that i am made up on upgrading his current reciever to a Technomate 5400 however i am in a pickle about the dish.

Understand that i have 2 options here. Either i replace current Motor with Diseqc motor or purchase a Vbox. It seems that either solution is comparable in price however i wanted some advice from better qualified users on the better solution.

I am quite savy with electrics etc and believe that either option is not too complicated and requires no real rewiring etc.

Please help......I am confused on what should be the best and most practical solution.

Thanks

Hi gico,

Welcome to the forum.

(already put in my twopennys worth elsewhere)

Hopefully you will get some other suggestions from some of the other members on here.
As you know, my suggestion was to keep the 36V motor and go for a V-box.Easiest and best.

Gico, you dont mention what size dish you have. Because it already has a 36 volt motor I assume it is largish. If so, definitely stick with the 36 volt motor and go for a v-box.

Yes dish is 1.0m

Does the 4 or 5 wires from the dish therefore go straight into the V-Box which then subsequently goes into the reciever.

Not entirely sure how it all works however have just been told to get the v-box rather than replace existing H-H motor.

Yes they should do, you just have to make sure you get them the right way round, otherwise it will bugger something up. Like the reed switch.

But you should be able to work it out from where the wires go on the back of the old receiver.

The wires from the motor go back to the v-box. The v-box is connected via the lnb aerial cable. ie the aerial cable goes from receiver to v-box and v-box to lnb.

As robbo says, dont mix up the motor and the reed sensor cables otherwise --POW--

Thanks guys. I need to look at the wires carefully when i next go to my dads house. Its his reciever i am trying to upgrade so the last thing i want is for it to go POW!!! Having said that i am sure that they are colour coded or label. Cannot recal the names of all the wires however i am sure that there was one call 5V. Are they colour coded?

Also heard that some motors have 4 wires and some have 5. Is that correct?

Appreciate any help you can give.

I think the 5-wire ones have an optical sensor, which requires a 5V supply, so that is probably why there is a 5V wire. I don't think all V-boxes have a 5V power supply on the output. Looks like the Technomate v-box II does.

Moteck do one too, I expect that they are clones of eachother.

I have never seen motor control cable, but it is bound to have different colour wires, it would be very silly if it didn't.
