Default What next????

Hi all may i start by saying hello and what a great site .This is my first post so be gentle lol
I currently have the following set up 90cm dish motorized on south facing wall with a Fortecstar 5100 Ultra reciever.I have had the kit for a while but after numerous house move only just set this lot up and already i feel as tho i'm behind the times so i have decided i need to upgrade. As the budget will be limited to stages do i.

A:Get a programmer and cam (will these open much on my dated box?)

B:Get a cable box and keep her indoors happy (yes i do have a live feed from vm)

C:Upgrade to a Technomate 5400ci (any coments on these good or bad)

Or D:Any sugestions welcome

Many thanks
Lee

Hi zade,
Welcome to the forum.

My choice would be 'C'.

Buying a new CAM for your receiver such as a diablo or dragon (TRex) should work with your receiver if it has a CI slot. The cost of these items with the programmer would probably set you back up to £100. Have a look in the CAMs section for more details.

A new satellite receiver such as a TM is a good choice, as the TMs are well supported at the moment, and are very easy to use. The channels open at the moment with the CAM and the Patched TM are similar, but things are changing all the time, with a lot of providers upgrading their encryptions.

Both A and C choices are great if you want to get back into the satellite hobby and have a bit of fun, with the widest range of channels available to you. A Dreambox may also be another option if you fancied the challenge of getting into them.

Since you have posted in the satellite section, I don't have much to say about cable, other than if its just watching TV you are after, then it will probably do the job.

Hi robbo

Thanks for your reply i think a new reciever will be my first port of call for now then. I did buy the fortec because it could be patched but that seemed to end all to quick thats why i was considering the cam option but as even my satellite list on the fortec seems out of date i think i will get a new reciever then get a cam at a later date.
I did have a look at getting a dreambox but they look a bit complicated at the mo and i would hate to buy one and stuff it up and have nowt to watch maybe when i'm up to speed with a new box i may look at that option again

To breathe life back into the Fortec you would definitely need a cam and programmer, as the box is now unsupported. The sat list and channels could be updated.

However, if you were to go for the TM, then as the box is well supported, it would not be necessary to buy a cam or programmer at this stage.

Hi Yorks

It looks like the new receiver option is going to win hands down so the choice now is will it be the TM or is there somthing else around the £100 mark i should be considering.

It's all down to personal choice really. Vantage and Mvision are well thought of by their owners - but the latest range of Technomates look good value for money and are well supported.

Must say had never heard off those two makes b4 so if i do upgrade i think it will be the TM and lets hope that the patches last a bit longer on that than they did on the fortec
