I'm thinking about getting a Linux box with an ethernet port - maybe an Eagle - and I'm just thinking through how it would hook up. I understand it's advantageous to have the box connected to the internet. Trouble is, my wireless ADSL router is in another room and can't be moved. Can't run a cable either. My XP Home laptop (equipped with WiFi card and ethernet port), which lives where the box will be, reliably connects to the router at 54Mbps. The laptop isn't always on, but I'm not intending to do any card sharing, so I assume it would just be necessary for occasional key updates.
Can I just connect the Linux box (DM500S clone, probably) to the laptop with a CAT5 crossover cable? I see there's an option in XP Network Properties on the laptop to "bridge connections" - would I need to mess with that? I've read about people having a lot of trouble, such as getting either an internet connection with the laptop, but no connection to the DB, or vice versa, but not both at the same time. At the moment, the laptop ethernet port is disabled - what settings would I need in the properties for that? All IP addresses in the current network are static, of the form 10.0.0.xxx. Cheers, Sol |

What I suggest you do, is to just connect your linux box to your laptop as a network connection.
You can then download any files etc to your laptop from the interent and unzip any files to a particular folder. Then ftp the files over the network to your linux box. Its a bit more difficult than direct download from a server to the linux box but not difficult.

You can try a wireless access point to connect your linux box to the network via the router but I have heard people have problems with wireless.

Hi, Jim is correct in what he says, I have a Sony Vaio, running Vista and can't do a thing with it on my dialup connection. Just do as Jin says and download the files to your laptop, unzip them to a folder, that you will make for them, and then just use DCC to FTP them to your box, that is the way I do it and it is really easy when you have done it a few times.
Very best regards and seasons greetings Wez |
