Unhappy no satellite signal is being received

hi all, i wonder if someone could help me on this. i keep on getting this message on my tv 'no satellite signal is being received' currently i do not subscribe to sky, i have never been, i just use my box for the fta channels, but because of this message all that i get is bbc1,2 and not even sky news.
i have used an amplifier but still to no avail. can someone please advice me on what to do because until i get a proper set up i depend on this to know what is going on in the world.

Hi,

It may be that you have a signal quality/strength problem.

It is ages since I looked at a Sky box, but somewhere in the menus it is possible to get a signal strength and quality reading for the default transponder. Check that out. As far as I remember, the quality has to be above 50%. If it isn't then maybe your cable or LNB is duff, or your dish is wrongly setup. What dish do you have, and who put it there?

Sounds like either your dish has moved slightly or your LNB is on it's way out

thank you robbo and lincsat for the reply, the dish is a standard sky dish which was left by the previous tenants,i was also suspecting the dish is shifted slightly, however out of curiousity i used a signal finder to check, and there was this loud audible sound which i undersatand indicate a presence of a satellite(i might be wrong here).
your advice as to what to do is wormly welcome. thanks.

What make receiver is it? Some of the older ones are notorious for capacitors failing in their power supply and giving the "no satellite signal"

Old Grundigs are especially prone.

That doesn't necessarily mean it is aligned. You have to make sure that the squealing noise is at is loudest/highest pitch?, that is that the position of the dish is adjusted for maximum signal from the satellite, and not just getting a bit from the edge of the beam.

could just as easy be the lnb or the box - does it come up no satelite signal on all channels when it does it or just certain ones? the older lnb's quite often lose half the signals and need replacing
if it looks like this -
chances are it needs a new one as these are the worst for it!

I'm starting to get this message on a lot of channels as well. I just recently unsubscribed from sky as well. Is it just a coincidence or what ?

I'm about to rip the freaking dish out any way -move to freeview and get a dreambox HD setup when it comes out (maybe )

Joe.
