can u put a paid sub card in a db500s and it will take off the keys

You can use legit subs card yes. A DB will read almost anything.

do i just slide the card in the slot or dop i have to do something differnt. do i have to leave it in to watch tv or will it read it and i can pull it out and it will still work

It depends on which card it is. Generally, you need to install one of the emus and after that you may need to insert card and boxkey info. If it is something like a Digitalb card, you just pop it in and select one of the emus.

Do you know if that card is paired with the sat receiver? If so you will need to somehow enter the card and box serial Nos into the emu. Unfortunately I dont know which emus/keys are suitable for the North American system.
