Ive got an old Fortec Star Lifetime Ultra - currently in use for dish alignment experiments. Its not a bad little receiver and perfectly adequate for FTA services. Having seen what happens to Fortecs over the last 2-3 years the only one Id consider buying nowadays is the Innovative for the built in c/s capability, but Id have to have a look at one first and see how well it works.

Scary no not really - you just have to realise there is weeks and weeks of head scratching and frustration before you get the best out of one.

Its almost impossible to kill a DB though.

If you can afford it then get a 7000 or a 7020 as there is plenty of folks got these and they are easy to set up for multiboot. This means you dont have to change the embedded software but put additional images (software) onto usb stick or compact flash card. If it goes completely pear shaped you switch off, pull the usb stick / cf card out and switch on and start again.

With the cheaper 500 series you have to flash the actual box itself. However even if this goes horribly wrong there are procedures which can recover most boxes using a serial cable.

Ive had a 7020 for about 18 months and its the best bit of sat kit Ive ever owned. Mines networked into my router and I back up the channel lists regularly onto the computer so if I want to play with a new image I multiboot it and copy the settings over

All very clever

Thats interesting as nanochikin has one of those as well and he finds it flaky as hell.

If zade wants something a bit more exotic theres also the Triple Dragon to consider as well

I have four dream boxes in my shed and have not used them for cs in ages as i have grown out of CS as when you have every package open it gets boring at the moment i use a vantage 221 s ci and am about to buy another one it is the best receiver i have ever used and puts the technomate and dreamboxes to shame
