Default Modem problem

I've just moved house, so signed up for VM broadband at my new place.
I got my new modem, a black surfboard type. I'm using the same Pc from my old house, so thought it would just plug and play. the new modem doesn't work, and for some reason I can't use lash applications so the setup Cd doesn't work.
Any suggestions?
I'm using the old modem from my old house, as that worked without any changes, but I want to start using my new modem as its smaller.
thanks
