If you want a 1080p 42 inch screen then the best TV within your price range is probably the Panasonic TH42PZ70. My advice though is not to get sucked in by all this 1080p hype. It is debatable as to whether you can see the difference between 720p and 1080p at normal viewing distances.

There is an astounding difference in games for instance, playing games at 1080p is far superior to 720p. The images are far crisper and typically you can see more. This is a bit like why upgrade from a 17" CRT 19" CRT in the days gone by. 1080p gives you almost twice the display resolution of 720p.
If you can afford it, I suggest you buy it.
We bought a Samsung 42" LCd TV recently, they look absolutely stunning - they are however massively let down by the crappy non-user friendly remote control. There is no simple, quick way to switch between the source that you are watching to another ( i.e. in a single button click), rather the remote has a source button that cycles throught the different sources whic is a tad annoying.

You should invest in a Logitech Harmony remote control, one button switching between, tv, dvd, cd, etc. it saves having the collection of three or four remotes on the sofa.
