You could look at the haynes guide to cable modems.

I do remember seeing a site several years ago about the technical side of cable from the server side - I'll try to find the link.

I've had a look at the haynes guide, it's great for if everything goes right and you only want to know how to program the modem, I would like to have a rough idea of how the security works behind the scenes as well so I can try and sort things out if there's a problem down the line...
