They're very good receivers for caravans because of the 12V input - not many alternatives around (except Dreambox 500 and as a noob you won't want to tackle one of those).

With patched Truman or Yumatu firmware loaded they will unscramble pretty much anything that's being unscrambled at the moment. That is, providing you get one with an Ali B1 chip. I couldn't swear to it, but I'm under the impression that most 12V ones are Ali B1. If you end up with an A1 or E1 then there are still options open to you. Trouble is, the only way to be sure what chip is in it is after purchase, take the lid off, prise the heatsink off the chip and read the numbers - no other way to do it, sorry.

So, I advise you to search on Ebay for SL65 12V - they come as either Silvercrest or Comag - identical underneath the badge. Take pot luck and see what you get. I paid just 22 quid for mine, including postage. It's my first ever receiver and I've had a lot of fun with it!

Just the receiver. I assume you're talking about the camping kit with the small dish. I haven't used one of those dishes so I don't know what it's capable of - depends what channels/packages you want to view, but you may find it a bit limiting.

Being able to check out the chip before you buy is a bonus - must be a very undestanding seller! You actually have to prise the thin heat sink off the chip with a fingernail and then gently remove the residual goo. If the heat sink is soldered to the circuit board, then you don't have to remove it - it's almost certainly an E1. Not a disaster but not as well supported as B1 currently.

My dish is about 70cm - an old oval Sky analogue dish which I got for free. Not on a caravan, though - on a ground mount ouside my house.

The Maplin Satellite suitcase with the SL65/12 that I got had an Ali B1 chip and I'd recommend this receiver. The kit with the S1003/12 is good too, however it has no RS232 socket so you can only load firmware by JTAG which takes about 12-15 hours instead of minutes. It also has only one scart socket and no audio out connectors. They would be fine for a caravan (you would need some way of getting internet access while you were away for getting keys for non autoupdating channels (Premi*re on and off). There are variations in what's in the kit. One has a suction base, one has a base that can be loaded with a brick or screwed to a wall or post. One has a compass that attaches to the dish to help alignment. So have a close look at what's in the box. Costco also did them before Christmas but I don't know if they're still in stock. I gather Lidl do them too now and again.

I'm in Yorkshire and get an adequate signal with the small dish in the box from Astra 19.2 Hotbird 13.0 and Astra 28.2 although I'm actually hooked up to an 80cm dish. The LNB is actually as good as an MTI blueline.
Go for it.

Depends which satellite you're pointing at. On 19.2E the main package we can get is Premiere. There's also ORF. On Hotbird 13E the main ones are TPS, DigiTV and Polsat. To find out what channels are on these packages, take a look at lyngsat.com.

Truman or Yumatu - no major differences, really. At the moment Truman is on version 1.3.82 whereas Yumatu is on 1.3.83. Premiere keys are auto updating on both.

Sol

EDIT: Truman is now also on 1.3.83
