Default Technomate

All right you guys i think youve converted me, ive got a nice spot in the garden where i could put a 1m or 1.2 dish on a pole like robbos one, only problem maybe two oak trees more or less dead south about 40 metres away, ive got a clear view east to west apart from that, im about 6 miles from luton airport, would the trees restrict many satellites, it doesnt look too bad now with no leaves on, or is it a case of try it and see. thinking of getting technomate 1500 or 5000 series is there much difference apart from the amount of channels.

Hi mate,

Have a look at the satellite arc sticky in the FAQs section. There are also some dishpointing calculators in there.

The top of the arc is about 30 degrees, and as you go east or west the elevation angle gets lower. It is about 25 degrees for 28.2E for me.

To work out whether the trees will be a problem you need to work out the elevation angle from the dish to the top of the trees, if it is less than 30 degrees you should be fine ( depending on your location). But even if it is a problem, you still have the eastern and western satellites (motorising the dish is the cheapest way to go for multi-sat reception)

The TM1000 series have bsically been superceded by the 5200,5300 and the 5400.

Functionality is more or less the same for most purposes except for the extra channel capacity, PVR ready (USB port) and being uable to update via the USB port (USB flash memory).

The 5400CI+ is the replacement of the 1500CI+, i.e it has a CAM slot and a card slot.

Let us know if you need any more help, and you will be set up in no time.

Robbo

On 28.2E/28.5E only the Free to air channels are watchable with the TM1000 series and TM5000 series receivers.

However with The right CAMS/cards/subscription etc etc you can get lots of other channels from lots of other satellites with a far greater choice, than Sly can offer.

Thanks for that robbo , looks like it may just clear the trees, going to wait for better weather before i start digging, its like a swamp at the moment, would it be better with a 1.2 motorised dish, are the motors ok with that size, we get a fair bit of wind across the fields at the back, although where im putting it is sheltered a bit by fences.

Yes, 1.2m is the maximum rating of the Diseqc1.2 motors in general. The Moteck sg2100 for example. Mine has a max of 90cm, and that is what I have, it's been OK so far. Normally its best to go up to just 1m, but you might be OK. It will run with 1.2m no doubt, it will probably just wear out prematurely. No gteat shakes, they are very cheap to buy.

I think Darkman does an all metal geared motor, it would be interesting to see if that fairs OK with a 1.2m dish.

I think it also has a lot to do with what the dish is made of aswell

The wind load will be the same regardless of what its made out of but you can get away with a bigger dish if you use one of those Aluminium or Fibreglass jobbies
