I really wish people would not do this, you do realise you and everyone else in the ubr is assigned to a *single* 38Mbit downstream card right? using 2x20mbit modems will let you completely steal the bandwith from every other user

Aint true m8..ill explain..i would see ur point if it wos the old legacy network VM were usin still, but as VM r usin fibre 2 the cabinets its the "last mile", ie YOUR coax line is the only line that takes a chunk of the available bandwidth from the local street cabinets, and if VM r rollin out 50Mb in test areas, a meagre 38 aint gonna hog em down!! Fibre, theoretically has limitless bandwidth+in a few years 50Mb+ is easily gonna be the norm, probably the minimum!!..And it would only be the dual wan user (2x20Mb modems) that would be usin 38Mb in a ubr, not "everyone else."

Err, your asigned to a single 38Mbit downstream card (thus why you cannot achieve 40Mbit with two modems), if you download using 2 modems ur literally leaving no bandwith for -anyone- else who is asigned to that downstream card.

50Mbit is using docsis3 and uses multiple (bonded) downstream frequencies and is nothing to do with the current docsis1 tiers.

50Mb aint specifically on Docsis 3.0 yet, it was 1st trialled on the Docsis 2.0+also 3.0b, but once its rolled out it will be using docsis 3.0 eventually, which is only being designed to make room for their HDTv service+also leave room for IPTv (which aint been guaranteed as of yet)
50mb has already been trialled in a few test areas+is being planned 4 national rollout by the beginning of next year..docsis 3.0 has been proposed by VM 4 mid next year+their own engineers admit even that is being optimistic+they predict the end of 2009/start of 2010 for full national operation. As for the 38mb single card, i aint so sure about that, cos in my flat i know there are at least 4 other 20mb users, but as the cards used acts like a switch and will therefore work with layer 2 addressing, 50 Mb WILL be acheived on a single card for single users by giving subbed highspeed modems multiple macs+this is how it could be tested on the docsis 2.0 coding+also 3.0beta.
Fibre to the house would be to costly for both VM+sub users so multiple macs+docsis 3.0 is by far the cheaper option..

so how many people do they normally assign to these cards then - surely that can't be good for even the legit 20mb custs. I

live in a very highly populated area, does this mean theres a chance there'll be loads on one card and so i've got no chance of even gettin 20mb??

I know that differentpeople will use at different times but if 10 people get online at once thats 3.8mb/s max - unless i'm lookin at this too simply ???

Good question m8..id like to know where the 38Mb figure came from cos as far as i know, no cards outside ur door need 2 be changed 2 get the incomin 50Mb, whether on Docsis 2 or 3...
I have 2 modems running at the same time in my house+none of my neighbours moan when i have em both running+ive asked em whether they notice a drop in speed+no1 yet has said they have!!

I think the 38Mb limit has been confused with the limits of the existing Ambit modems NOT how VM networks operate.
Now back to the original thread....WINGATE!

well im thinking of doing at least one modem as i have a xl connection i pay for allready. can anyone here recommend the best modem to get to use thats easily configed as the modems on ebay tend to be the 5101 e but people seem to say the ambits are easier?>
