Hi all,
Why would you want a special receiver for freesat? They can't be going to broadcast it encrypted, that would be defeating the object. Even if they do, I am very sure that it would not be too long till we see the keys for it. As I said they will not be encrypting it, so any receiver will do, unless you want the full EPG or the HD channels.

Nobody has said if the receivers will be HD, if they are not, then that again would not be very good for the person buying the box. I for one will not be buying a receiver for it, nor do I reckon will very many old hands at this hobby.

Very best regards Wez

There will be SD only receivers and 2 & 3 yes that is right 3 tuner HD PVRs,

At the moment the two i am testing are twin tuner HD pvrs,

Also now and in time to come freesat channels that are not on a uk spot beam will move to a uk spot beam when space becomes available and all channels will be FTA,

Ho rd,
Thanks for your post it has cleared up loads of questions in a few well placed words. It will be very interesting to see what the cost of the receivers will be. Thanks for your other post, regarding freesat, in another post.

Very best regards Wez

i have just signed up with sky with a 12 months sub for £19 smackers a month. especially now that FREESAT wont be starting up until the summer anyway. as far as HD is concerned its still early days and dont think worth the extra money for the HD box that sky offer.think £199. it has to be cheaper. once FREESATs own box comes onto the market i can see the prices dropping to £150 then we prob get one. i do have a large 1080P LCD tv . it does mean sky has competition now. what is not advertised (i wonder why) is that the sky box can be used for the free to viewand FTA with a small charge of £20 for there card. but offcourse yu cant get sky one and other sky only channels. the sensible thing is too sign up for the 12 month period then say bye bye sky at 12 months keep the box and dish and get the twenty quid card. plus offcourse yu get the FTA and FTV channels for free. i just wonder what channels that FREESAT will offer that cannot be got on the sky card and box.my bet none. (probably big difference will be the EPG and timer controls) waiting for the HD box from freesat might be be worth the wait. because there be a choice of HD boxes/ and by then there will be up 6 HD channels BBC1 BBC2 ITV Channel4 channel5 film 4 and maybe BBC3 on offer too. the plus point will be the competition sky now has. not just Virgin

It was never in Skys interest to inform that the dogibox could be used for
FTA, I have always prefered a FTA kit, personally the dogibox from Sky is restricted to certain parimeters which only a FTA box can get,As for Sky one well I would never watch it anyway.
Horses for courses, pay for FTA from Sky as many do, or get a FTA kit
and watch BBC/ITV etc free.

I can only speak about Channel 4 Wales, which is a PSB and always in the clear.

I also understand that Channel 4 outside Wales, which is a semi PSB is to go in the clear at the earliest moment,I was speaking to a BBC engineer a couple of weeks ago, he told me it was to go FTA on Satellite.

Anyway back to S4C (channel 4 Wales) already as three sat transponders on Astra 28, and uses all three during Royal Welsh Show week. It is muted that with the analog switch off, one of these will go
bi ling along with S4C digital on DTT, who knows.

FREESAT is not competition for sky it is for people to access PSB tv and was never meant or never will be also there will be NO pay services on FREESAT and never will be also FREESAT is just a marketing name like FREEVIEW is as it is easy for joe public to go in to a store and ask for a FREESAT box and not a dvb-s or dvb-s2 satellite receiver,
