I have to ask - why did you use the recovery disc? Try booting into safe mode:
Windows Backup and Restore Center restore back to a point before your tried the experiment

Have you used the restore point to roll the laptop back to a previous setting?

Hang on Im confused - did you get the safe boot screen sucessfully? Then find the restore point settings and set it back? If so try another earlier restore point.

If you are certain you know which prog is causing the problem then try this - it works in xp but no idea about in vista - vista is such a lousy pos ive not had a play with it yet.
Start it up in safe mode and let it start fully. Start - run - then type msconfig in the box. This will start a windows configuration utility up. In the startup tab untick the problem programme - and any other rubbish that isnt needed, then reboot the computer. BE CAREFUL with msconfig!

Write down what the settings are now, and have a go!
