Default Some real basics please

Hi there,

this is just an enquiry, at the moment the cable boxes eg Eurovox are all the rage over here in Ireland and I'd like to know if the same can be done with Satellite

I have Sky Satellite TV, is it possible to buy a new box (like eurovox) but one that handles satellite signal rather than cable signal?

Is it possible at all to do?

Or would I need to go and buy a new dish and box as outlined in your beginners setup guide?

I thought I might be able to just have to buy a new box and hook it up and off I go

Am I in dreamland?

Thanks!

Its certainly possible to watch *some* pay tv packages, and theres a lot of interesting fta stuff available in European skies.

You CANNOT get Sky UK like this though.

so does that mean I just need a new box?

I would have thought I'd all the FTA stuff coming in via Sky with my SKY package stands at the moment anyway? No?

Yes, that is true, you have all the FTA stuff from the 28.2/28.5E satellites on your Sky box (and depending on your card, the FTV, and Sky channels also).

However there is another world out there, besides Sky, transmitting from a many other satellites above our skies. From these an even bigger multitude of channels, which are either free to air, can be subscribed to or viewed with 'special' software/hardware (a limited few packages).

To make full use, a system that can receive from a number of satellite is essential.

Ah I see!

Cool thanks for all the info

If I'm honest there's really just a few channels I want to get my hands on all the movie channels and Setanta Sports (don't care about Sky sports) of course without paying the theives in Sky 68euros a month (scandalous amount of money IMO!!!!!)

38eur a month onto my basic package was just too much for me to swallow and everyone is raving about these Eurovoxes so I thought I could jump on the bandwagon with a satellite version of the box

obviously not

god loves a chancer though

Broaden your horizons

Sky +Sentanta are not the only people who do movies and sports.

I had Sky movies for a while, you soon run out of something to watch, because they are repeated so much, that's if you can find something worth watching in he first place,. I cancelled movie subs, and SKY!

For about a £10 a month, you can have access to a lot of the Premierships games, for double that and a bit some movies as well, plus all the FTA stuff, which does include movies.

I guess I didn't know there was anything out there bar sky (how dumb am I!?)

*so*

if I was to broaden my horizons, I'd be looking at putting up a new dish plus getting a new satellite digital receiver?

That is correct. A motorised one would be best. A basic setup, more or less, everything you need (excluding any subscription cards) between £150 to £200.

Not at all - Sky have done a superb marketing job to make the British people think satellite tv = sky

For a long time there were a few thousand rebels who knew better, but with sky forever cranking up the subscription cost, and the easy availiabilty of 3pm saturday football on foreign subscription services the level of interest in other sat tv has rocketed over the last 2-3 years

If you want to see the sort of free stuff thats available to anyone with an 80 cm dish and a 50 quid non sky digital receiver have a look at

DigitalSat UK

Most of the lists need updating when Ive got a few minutes but it will give you an idea of whats out there away from Sky.. Everything on there is transmitted in the clear.
