Default Build your own?

I got loads of old computer bits kicking about so i thought i might set my self a bit of a challenge and have a go at building my own sat receiver / disk recorder based on Linux. I have been looking around for a while and recently come accross this site _http://www.cadsoft.de/vdr/index.htm
Has any body else ever took on such a challenge and if so were you succesfull? looks like it could be fun ( or just a massive head ache). Any body else fancy giving it a go?

I'd love a MythTV box, which would run a Skystar 2.

To fiddly for me I think, and with limited EPG's out there except for the odd few written from RSS data I dont think its worth it for multi sat, same with DVR's

The link to the LINUXTV project doesn't work.

Other than that, it does sound like a bit of fun, presumably you have to make sure you get a Graphics card/capability with TV out or similar.

Maybe you could use an old receiver box for a shell. That one in the link sure looks pug ugly.

Try this link _http://linuxtv.org/

It would be interesting to see what you could achieve by building a box such as this. i wonder if you could give it any emu capabilities? is this possible with a pc based card like a skystar 2?
is a linux type box like a TM9100 or a Dreambox basically a small pc that you can program, and is this what you are doing when you load an image on to it? and without an image does it just become a blank sheet that just sits there or does it have some sort of basic operating system built into it.
loads of questions...sorry

Yes you can give full emu capability to a pc based receiver in both linux and windoze operating mode.

I would love to have a go once SWMBO is looking the other way. In the meantime I just run my SS2 satellite card in my PC and link it to my Dreambox to read my card. I am very interested in the Skystar HD2 card which is due out because it looks as if it has less cpu demand and obviously receives outputs HD channels.
