Default Technomate 12v operation

I'm in the process of getting a satellite setup for my motorhome and want a FTA box that ideally works on 12v and 230v.
Am I right in thinking that the Technomate boxes for example, although fed by mains, reduce this internally to 12v? Has anyone converted them for a purpose similar to mine and how difficult was it?

Not feasible, the main board and peripherals use a multitude of different voltages. An inverter is probably the best option for this receiver.

Take a look at this one.

Maplin > 12V Satellite Receiver

Or if you want a Sky receiver you could look on Ebay for a pace 1000, thats what I use in our caravan.

As I have sais before inverters wast power, even the most efficient.

Yes inverters can be inefficient, but you can get very small ones, and the current consumption of the receiver is very low anyway.

Thanks for the replies folks. Has anyone used the Maplin one? How is it for sensitivity?

What size of inverter are you thinking of?

There are purpose made 12v receivers for on the move.

At work we use the 3kW ones running off 24V DC for mobile use (dedicated 2nd alternator and batteries), but I was thinking of the small cheapo ones they sell for laptops and the like, saw one lying in a drawer a while back at work, but don't remember the actual specifications of it now.

But anyway, I agree with the other advice, unless you are desperate for a TM, one of the receivers specifically designed for mobile use would be more efficient.

Doesn't matter how small or efficient the inverter is it will wast energy and if all you have is a leisure battery to use that is also supplying your energy to power lights, water pump TV etc you have to use it as efficiently as you can, waisting a few watts every hour on an inverter soon adds up to a flat battery. and if you are stuck on a rally sight with no way of charging it you are well and truly buggered.
