Does the Virgin cable system carry 5.1 surround sound digital tracks on its film channels?
The reason I ask is that the normal receivers don't appear to have digital sound outputs. I assume that for normal users, the output is just stereo output via scart, hence no digital output is provided.

The majority of customisable receivers come with digital output these days. Ours either have Optical / TOSLink output or Digital Coaxial output.
As Jimbo and Reddiesel have already stated, VM are a bit slow on the uptake with 5.1 only coming through on their HD channels and with some movies. You can hook up the digital signal to an AMP which will output audio to you 5.1 system, but it will only be in stereo, all be it good quality stereo
