Does anyone have any experience or advice on how to improve the transfer speed when moving files around a LAN. I bought a D-link DIR-665 router as it was advertised to support gigbait lan and 9k jumbo frames. However, I notice that my systems peak at around 5 megabytes a second when transferring files between to systems ( both of which have gigabit ports and 9k Jumbo frames support enabled).
Could the speed be affected by other slower devices connected to the router? I even tried a gigabit switch and got the same results. |

Are you using CAT-6 cable ? AIUI, most Ethernet cables are CAT-5 which may not fully support Gigabit.
I can transfer a 1.07GB 720p TV Episode over the LAN in around 3 Minutes, which doesn't seem too bad.

yes, i have cat-6 cables connecting the main PC with my Server and RAID storage. I also have a media centre connected to the network using the new 200mb AV homeplug adaptors and I seem to get the same overall transfer speed on either machine.
I do notice that a 1.5gb file reported an estimated time of 4 minutes, however an 8gb 720p movie was reporteing an estimated 19 minutes to transfer. Running a speedtest on the system reported that the maximum transfer speed was around 5 megabytes/second - this is lower than the max for 100mb lan. Correct me if I am wrong - I would expect somewhere closer to the 7.5-8 megabytes/sec on 100mb connection, perhaps around 30 megabytes/second roughly for gigabit lan. |

Slight correction to above,
I just ran another speedtest and noticed the following results: 10.03 megabytes /sec when transfering a 1.5gb file from the RIAD 5 NAS dev ice. average was around 8.3 megabytes/sec. I got an average of 7.55 megabytes / sec when trasfering an 8.2 gb movie from the same source. Dissapointingly - windows task task manager is also showing just 4%-8% network utilisation. |
