There are some good radio stations catering for all musical tastes out there. These are a few of my personal favorites on Astra 1 (19.2E)
12207 V 27500 Frequence Jazz – Station based in Lyons broadcasting jazz in all its forms. FIP (France Inter Paris) – A unique station broadcasting an eclectic mixture of music including Latin American, jazz, some pop, some classical and world music. It is an interesting mixture you won’t find on any other station. Carries a news summary in French at about 10 minutes to the hour. Radio Classique – France’s answer to Classic FM but with a lot fewer adverts. Reverts to news programmes in French in the early morning and late afternoon. These stations above may appear to be encrypted but they are not. 12574 H 22000 Radio 10 Gold – Dutch station pumping out classic rock and pop. 12266 H 27500 WDR Klassik – German classical music station. Listening to music from satellite is much better if you can avoid using the TV speaker(s). We can receive lovely digital stereo sound. I use a Hi-Fi amp with good speakers fed directly from the phono outputs of the receiver. However, merely connecting reasonable quality computer speakers to the headphone socket of a TV will greatly improve your sound. |

Agreed, Belmus 48. I have also been listening to Lyric FM (RTE from Ireland), the equivalent of Classic FM, on 10744H, 22000.
Also, I thought I had lost BBC Radio 3 but they changed the frequency of all BBC Radio recently and can now be found on 11954H, 27500. Happy Listening.

Yes, I like Lyric FM too - I often put it on in the mornings. I have also heard some good live concerts from them in the past. I rarely listen to Classic FM - too many adverts.
Long live satellite radio! |

I attended a Brahms Piano Concerto in Dublin over a year ago which was broadcast later. I managed to record it from satellite radio onto minidisc and then eventually made it into a CD with the help of a computer. The sound quality was stunning and satellite radio gives a much wider frequency response and is not nearly so compressed as terrestial radio transmitters.

Hi c.c.
That's a great facility you have there. I only have a zone 2 dish onto which I have fixed a second LNB for Astra1. She who must be obeyed won't let me put up another dish at the moment so I won't be able to enjoy what you are able to listen yet. (I am working on the problem but am not holding my breath). MiniDisc is a great recording medium, Diapason. What software did you use to make the transfer? I use Cakewalk a lot for recording, arranging and composing. I have been using MD for many years and will continue to do so but MP3 seems to be taking over the world. BM48 |

I transfer it to computer by analogue means (through the headphone output.) I then burn the CDs using Nero, but before that I can tweak the sound if needbe using Nero Wave Editor. I have never mastered the softward which came with the minidisc, but I think there are limitations in its use - i.e. only from computer to minidisc, not the other way round.
Happy Listening.

Hi again, Diapason
(With a handle like that you must be an organist) I think the software that comes with MD has serious issues. I believe, but I am not sure, that it can make a connection between your computer and Sony and that everything that you record using the software can be monitored. The software is also very difficult to remove completely from your computer once installed. You were very wise not to use it. Having said that, recording onto MD using analogue connections in real time is fine. I don't know about you, but I would have great difficulty telling the difference between a recording on MD and one on CD most of the time. Heard a lovely Mozart piano quartet on French Radio Classique today - made my day! BM48 |

You got it in one! If you can enlarge the avatar you'll see that it is from a live cinema organ performance with a projection of hands and keys on screen.
My best minidisc recording from satellite radio was "The Apostles" from the Proms. You could feel the 32 foot organ bass in the house. I then produced a CD and there was absolutely no difference. Crank up the volume - bliss....

Hi Diapaison
Yes, I can understand your pleasure at having made the recording. My receiver has a digital output which will connect to my MD deck with a single phono cable. This makes excellent recordings as you don’t have to worry about the recording level – it sets it automatically and you can’t overdo it. I don’t know “The Apostles” but I did sing in a performance of “Gerontius” once. I have also had a go on a cinema organ once but, being only an “adequate” pianist, the pedals, bells and whistles were all a bit too much for me I’m afraid. I have a new piece of kit – an AV sender and receiver. I have the receiver connected to my STB and I use a good quality pair of powered speakers hooked up to the AV receiver when I am in another part of the house. It works very well – I can listen to the radio anywhere, even in the garden. Which three satellite do you receive? Cheers. BM48 |
