Unhappy Knackered my girlfriends internet

Hope someone could help me here before i get my arse kicked...

My girlfriend has 2mb broadband with VM which has been working perfectly since installation.

Today I was bored, and home alone and decided to experiment with an old N*L 250 modem that has been sat collecting dust from a previous house owner.

I was doubtful it would work but to my surprise it all lit up and was working fine. I did a speed-test and was chuffed to bits when I found it was operating at 8mb !!

So for about 20 mins i'm surfing and downloading at 8mb happy as Larry when suddenly webpages were being auto-directed to a VM modem activation site.

Virgin Media activation

Realising that this modem won't work I've put the original one (255 model) back in, turned it off for 5 mins at the mains and rebooted everything.

Now the problem is 90% of webpages are still auto-redirecting to the VM modem activation site, even tho this is the original modem.

I've tried re-activating the modem using the step by step on-screen methods, the VM site correctly identifies the modem and that it has already been registered but still.... no joy!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i'm reluctant to be robbed by their support line and also even more reluctant to have an engineer visit because of my eurovox set up

Thanks in advance.. Tim

They dont do cd anymore and my bet will be to go ahead with online activation with original modem.

Dont bother with any installation cd's, they are not needed and cause more problems than they solve.

Have you rebooted pc? most likely windows has cached the DNS for the websites as the activation page, failing that phone VM and play dumb, they can only trace modems back to location via green boxes so they wont know you've been fiddling. For safety sake though remove any dodgy boxes from the feed before calling them though.
