Default Speed up boot up

I decided that waiting for nearly 5 minutes for my computer to boot up was a bit long so did some research. I've now got it down to a minute and a quarter.(Windows XP)

Go to "Start", then "Run" and type "msconfig". Select "Startup" and that lists all the programs which start when you switch on the computer. Remove the ticks from the check boxes on everything which does not refer to the System, keeping virus checkers and diallers. I had all sorts of every program ever loaded wanting to begin on the startup.

Hey presto, quick boot up and the programs run faster too.

Hope that's helpful and that I have not repeated what has gone before.

Its annoying that almost every programme you install on a computer decides it needs to launch at system boot. Which is complete nonsense of course.... Please BE CAREFUL what you turn off - DONT turn off any virus scanners - you WILL get nailed as soon as you go on the net if you do!

I did hear of one case recently where there were about a dozen different toolbars all trying to load at once because the family kids had installed every one they could find!

The other thing that can slow boot up is having scanners connected or if the computer is short of memory - if there is insufficient ram installed the computer has to transfer things to and from a swap file on the hard drive. 256mb ram may have been plenty for win 98, but is hopeless for xp.

Scratch that I found them. I removed every tick apart from AGV, Zone alarm, Sound card and Webshots, re booted no difference what so ever PC has Athlon 3000 Barton CPU 1.5mb DDR 333 ram. The slowest part I find is waiting for AGV and Zone alarm to load (about 30-45 seconds) then for another 30-45 seconds the PC doesn't want to do anything, its as if it's sorting itself out. Once its done that its really quite fast. Just the initial start up thats a bit slow. Shouldn't complain really, when I think of the first PC I had that took a full 5 minuets to start and load Windows 95That was pre Pentium days think it was an Intel 4 something, the power switch was on the back for some reason, it didn't have a CD but did have one of those really big floppy drives.

Don't forget to remove your TMP files, Internet history.. always a good place to start. There is also the old Defrag chestnut that everybody seems to have forgotten about
