Question Yet another Newbie question on setups

I'm new to this, but have always wanted to get some more gadgets... I'm now looking at buying some kit and doing the install myself (I've got everything crossed ), so here's the question:

I'm planning on buying a TM 5400CI+USB along with a TM2100 motor, which LNB would be suitable and should I have more than one ???

Any help you guys can provide would be great. I've been reading this forum for hours and now have square eyes

Hi BigRich, welcome to the forum.

For a motorised dish you only need one LNB.

I have an Inverto Silvertech and a Smart Titanium, I find the Silvertech slightly better, but these things vary in performance anyway.

Also you are going to need a dish, the biggest you can get away with, 1m is the maximum you can have without planning permission.

Question Re: Yet another Newbie question on setups

So.... a lot changes over an evening when talking to your other half about getting the kit bought.

It started something like, I going to buy this model and it will be able to do this that and the other. She then says, since we just spent £££££'s on my new TV and home cinema set-up should'nt we get an HD set-up instead.

So where do I start now and how to I decide ???

Hi, My suggestion would be that if you can hold off for a wee while, then there should be a few more HD boxes about.

Dreambox are to bring out the 8000HD Linux box soon, but the drawback is their price, they are supposed to be going to cost €800, too much for me.

I am sure there are others who can advise you on what is about now, but having just bought a new dreambox 7025 I shall not be buying anything new very soon, nor would I want to either. I am very happy with my new box and, for that matter, my old dreambox 500s.

Good luck and very best regards Wez

Depend if you want a straight forward HD receiver or PVR either by USB (cannot watch another channel while recording) or one with a built in HDD and twin tuners (where you can record one channel and watch another!) Also what budget have you in mind?

Post Re: Yet another Newbie question on setups

Well... I like to be able to watch one channel and record another, although I do have Sky and Freeview already, I don't know if I will use it very often.

I'm looking at spending about £350 - £400 might go a little higher if I see something I love (did I mention I was gadget mad !) This will have to include all the bits as I don't have anything just yet.

Happy to try the install myself.. I have a few technical skills !!

I may have an issue with the wind though, so will have to make sure it good and safe.

There is no HD twin tuner currently available that is under £430 the one's available are the Topfield TF7710 and the Humax iCord. For this type of budget (only just!) you will be looking at the Technomate 6900 which has only 1 sat tuner and 1 freeview tuner and only the capabilities to record on a USB stick or USB HDD and not in HD only SD.
