Default Lightning strike.

Is there a way of grounding the dish, to stop any damage to equipment in case of a lightning strike ? or would that make it more liable to be struck?.

If lightning strikes the dish its still going to blow out most of your electric circuits via the coax cable to the receiver even if the dish is grounded.

If the dish is above the roofline then it may be worth grounding the dish to stop charge building up on it, but if its below the roofline its not going to make any difference whatsoever - charge will build up on the highest point of the building to some degree in any case.

How do you ground them RD ? To a water pipe or something like that, or to mains supply earth?.
I would have thought that if it did strike it would take the easiest path to earth and may not do so much damage.

If I recall correctly (which happens very seldom anymore), there was an article in an old Frank Baylin Satellite tech book stating how to install a voltage regulator chip somewhere at the dish to protect the electrical from overvoltage.

I always ground my tv aerials and all my dishes and at home and the lnb feed but do not need to ground my floor mount dishes only the lnb coax feeds as the pole on the dishes in the garden goes direct in to the ground any way,

In the USA it is the law that dishes must be grounded and companies like directv will not do a install with out it on it see page 2 of this pdf http://www.directv.com/learn/pdf/SelfInstallGuide.pdf

See the photos i have attached this is what i use at home and in work and i think if i did not use one in work i would get the sack, They just go in between the coax cable then put the earth cable in to the ground by using a grounding rod that is it, Also if your tv aerial or dish is wall mounted you need to ground the bracket as well

If you need more info just type " how to ground a satellite dish " in to google,

Also you can get hold of them here Grounding Supplies
