Default Ch4, E4, Ch5 etc?

I seem to remember in a recent issue of What Satellite that Channel 4 and ITV HD were coming to FTA.
Is there any more news on that?

Also, any plans for E4 and Ch5 to come on FTA?

I mean we have Film 4 and Film 4+1 so why not Channel 4????

AIUI, the Channel4 family are contracted to NDS to the late Spring/Early Summer. I believe that 5 are contracted until next year.

My understanding is that ITVHD will be FTA from launch.

Channel 4 and its siblings are tied into an encryption contract with Sky until around Q3 2008.

This was signed nearly 5 years ago, and the satellite scene has changed greatly since then but a contract is a contract and C4 was quite happy to sign it in 2003ish. Its widely expected the C4 family of channels will go fta once the contract expires (or they buy it out - no-one knows if this is possible apart from the lawyers for the 2 sides) Although this is not definite to happen - they might get an offer they cant refuse from Sky!

ITV 1 HD is expected to launch reasonably soon - presumably it will be a single generic channel rather than a full regional service due to bandwith restrictions.

C5 is tied into encryption contracts until mid 2009 so dont expect them anytime soon - see paragraph 1 about contracts......

Keep an eye on the foruum because as soon as there is any definite news about encryption changes someone will break it.

It has to be remembered that none of the channel five channels are what is known as FTA, they, as is channel 4, FTV (free to view). FTA means that there is no need of a card to view that channel so it if free to air, FTV, on the other hand, requires a card to be viewed.
I am not being a smart ar*e in telling you this, I am just explaining the difference in the two terminologies.

Very best regards Wez

as most of us know sky is chargeing £10 a month just for the few channels they have. (on top of the usual subscription.of £19/21 or whatever) i personally think sky should give a discount on the HD service if yu have the movies and sports channels. But the way Sky is doing things the HD service is completley seperate from the other services. Hopefully FREESAT is only a couple of months away. this may stop Sky chargeing for what is basically the same channels on HD excpt sky one . Offcourse no one knows when the FREESAT HD service will start. i reckon myslef they have to get it up and running before the olympics start later in the summer.

Freesat will be no competition to Sky, it won't affect Sky's pricing for anything. Why should they give a discount to watch Sports & Movies in HD?

You can already get a FTA HD box to use for the Olympics if you are so inclined - just like you could get one for the World Cup Soccer.

I seem to be watching Channel 4 with no sound as Programme 8350 on my Comag sl35. However, this can only be view in the EPG mode. As soon as I go to put in full screen mode, it tells me it is scrambled.
