Default Who has tried Linux?

As im now a bit of a Linux convert after using it for a while, I was just wondering how many others have given it a go and what their veiws are?

Im currently running a dual boot set up on my PC. Running Win XP and Freespire 2.0 Linux. I must admit i now seem to spend more and more time running in Linux mainly because my Pc just seems to run much faster than it does when its running XP.
I plumped for Freespire 2.0 Linux in the end because it seemed the most user friendly of all the ones i downloaded and tried and also because of the excellent CNR client that comes bundled with it. This makes downloading and installing the mounds of free software available an absolute breeze especially as im no computer whizz

so out of interest how many other people have given Linux a try?

When creating D-Box images I use Ubuntu, not a full install though, just a virtual desktop running in VMWare.

I still remember DOS, so some functions aren't too difficult, but I'm too old to switch to it full time - and a lot of my apps are for winblows only.

Like you I am a bit too long in the tooth to go full time at it, but I have tried Ubuntu ,as Nano has. I had it installed on my XP laptop, but did a clean install of XP to try and get my network to work, but might as well have not. I still have it on disk so I will have another go soon. My computer start was with the old Sinclare so I am not too phased but having to use DOS or basic.

My main problem with Linux is that my dial up is sh*t, 3.2 Mbps at best, and the amount of stuff that needs to be downloaded for it is just not possible for me. I had to go to the net cafe to download Ubbntu and any big files that need to be downloaded.

Very best regards Wez

ive had a dual boot system for some time, with ubuntu and xp, works great using a seperate drive for ubuntu, software instalation has been made much more user friendly, the boot options menu is the only difference on boot, and for those with concerns, xp is totally unaffected. i believe in the not too distant future a free os will be the choice of the majority of desktop users, especially if vista is all that the mighty msoft has to offer, that particular windows version has done more to promote linux than any other medium. cya

Hi madrat,
It is free, but you can pay for disks with it on it, but it is nothing like the cost of windows. You don't need it on your machine, it can be run from a CD, it is that small, in some instances. Most people would advise you to try it out on disk, that is run it for disk, without have it installed on your machine.

Google it and you will be very surprised at what you discover about it. It is free and is user friendly. It is also developed by those that use it, nobody owns it, everyone who uses it can be part of its development.

You can download Ubuntu in a short time.

Very best regards Wez

Thanks

There seams to be a lot of Linux versions. Is Ubuntu the latest?

Can I burn it to CD and then install it onto a hard drive?

More or less, you first download it then you have extract it and burn it to a disk. It does not take that long. You have no need to install it to your HDD, if I were you, I would just run it from the disk, then if you like it you can install it on the HDD.

I had it installed on my Toshiba, along with the XP. When you boot the machine it will go to the linux OS, if you are not there while it is booting. You need to be there to move down the screen to the XP if you need to use it. I did a clean install of XP, to try and get nmy network to allow my box to connect to the net, so I have not got the linux on either machine. If I now want to run Ubuntu I can run it from the CD.

Hope this is of help to you madrat and good luck with it.

Very best regrds Wez
