Well, I've only been here 5 minutes and I getting carried away with asking questions.
![]() So here's yet another question from me..... I've been reading through the stickys on Sat Arc and other things. What I'm trying to get to grips with is where to put my dish. The back of the house is South facing, and there are no buildings behind me, however there are a couple of trees. Any suggestions on how I can work out if the trees are going to be in the way ?? Thanks as always to you nice people, Rich |

Hi Rich, The trees might not be that much of a problem, if they are not too high. If you had your dish set up you will have a better idea of the extent of the problem, if any. It would help if you could let us know where the trees are, east or west of your intended dish position? You must not be that far of 0 degrees there, so your set up sat would be Thor 1W, with this in mind, when you look due south from where you re going to site the dish, what angle do the trees come in at. If you have 30W of due south and about 42 E in a clear line of sight then you will be OK.

Well... I've worked out my lat and long as follows:
Lat : 53.3192 Long : -1.5094 The tress are about 10 to 15 meters from the house and are in line with first floor windows. I was thinking about putting the dish between the windows on the first floor. Thanks for the help so far Wez. |

There are some useful links here:-
Dish Setup - Angle Calculators The SatLex link has an 'Elevation to obstacle' calculator, which will tell you the minimum elevation required to clear the trees. You will first need to know the required elevation. In your location you would need an elevation angle of around 15 degrees to see from 45E to 45W. In other words the trees would need to fall below this angle from your dish location to have a clear sight of the sat arc. Astra 2 at 28.2E requires an elevation angle of about 23 degrees. From your description it sounds like your dish would be at a similar height to the trees so there should be no problem. Yorks ![]() Last edited by Yorks; 29-02-08 at 09:19 PM. |

Hi if you mean that the tops of them are level with the first floor window, then you should have no problems with them, your signal is coming from 22500 miles above the equator so the angle from there to your dish should be enough to miss the tree tops. Your chosen location for the dish should be good enough.

Tanks Yorks, better than my poor instructions, but he should be OK if he puts the dish where he is intending to.

Your more than welcome Rich, we all were beginners once. I can never understand why people complain about kids asking questions, if they are asking then they are wanting to learn, I am not for one moment calling you a child, but the same applies to beginners, if we never asked questions we would never learn anything.
Very best regards Wez
