Default Do I need DUE SOUTH satellite for Motorised dish set up?

Having read the sticky, it seems to suggest using THOR for initial setup. I am adding a motor to my wife's satellite presently pointing 18E for KBS World (Korean TV). Can I use this for the initial setup? If so how do I get the motor in the right place?

With thanks,

Chris Rees

Hi mate,
What satellite you use to set up your motor is determined by your location, more to the point, your longitude. For anyone near the meridian line, i.e. 0 Degrees, the Thor sat at 1W would be the nearest sat to due south from that position. The sats vary as you go east or west, my own rotor is set up on 8W, as my location is close to 10W, so 8W is the nearest sat to my due south.

Please let us know what part of the country you live in and then we can take things further.

Very best regards Wez

Incidently there are no satellites at 18E, do you mean 13E or possibly 26E?

Yes, as Wez says, use the satellite closest to your longitude for initial setup, so that it is done at the top of the arc.

If you have a Diseqc/USALS motor, firstly make sure your long and lat are in the receiver then send the dish to the satellite closest to your due south. Once there adjust the declination (tilt of dish) and the azimuth of the motor on the pole for max signal on a chosen transponder. If the pole is vertical and the elevation (motor) is correct you should be tracking the arc reasonably well.

My position is 51.565N and -2.621 is that 2.621W? I'm on the welsh border ie West of greenwich!!

As noted 13E for Hotbird. You seem to be saying still go for nearest to due south for best tracking?

Thanks for the replies,

Chris

Hi, You should use 1W as your due south sat then.

as robbo has told you put your latitude and longitude into your box, then send the dish to Thor 1W, when you get the dish there, do as robbo has said and get the best reception you can from the sat. If your pole is vertical, on all sides, it is best to test it in at least three positions round the circumference, then you should be able to receive signals for all sats that it is possible to get them from.

Good luck with it, if you get stuck just give us a shout, that is what we are here for.

Very best regards Wez

Yep, 2.621W.

Yep, works best if you do it at the top of the arc.

For 1W just pick 11325H for the transponder, and get the max signal on that, you should get BBC World FTA.

Thanks for the help, I got the Moteck installed yesterday - yes I was out in the wind, but between rain-breaks. Finally found Thor and got BBC World.

Have now searched various satellites and got lots of progs,

HOWEVER, I mainly want KBS World from the Arabsat4 satellite (formerly named Arabsat 2D and it seems to be named BADR4 on Lynsat!!). My old, cheap (Lidl PartyII) receiver doesn't have this in it's list. Can I add it or is it the KU-Arabsat 2/3,

I have tried entering manually the Transponder info, but am only getting CNN as FTA on that satellite.

The channel info (from the KBS World website) is 12054V, 27500, 3/4.

Any clues?

If anyone is able to get this channel FTA, I would love to get the correct info...

Chris
PS Thanks for the encouragement thus far.

Badr4 at 26E, that may be your problem. 26E can be difficult as it is right next to 28.2E, and if the frequencies are close enough the signal can get swamped.

What size dish is it?

You should already have a satellite at 26E listed on your receiver, don't worry about the name, it doesn't matter. You just need to ensure that you have the transponders you want listed.

Thanks for the quick resposne.

I have a TRIAX 1m dish.

As I said, I'm getting CNN on 26E with 71/72 ST and SQ. I entered the transponder info for KBS and did a rescan on the satellite, but only CNN and 7 pay channels came up (not KBS)

Are you able to :

1) Confirm KBS World is available FTA at this location
2) Give me an alternative sat to add a transponder too?

If I KNOW the broadcast is there FTA, I am willing to purchase a decent HDD sat recorder with blind search or whatever, but if it's not, well...

Thanks again for the help.

Chris

It is 26E not 26.8E

Obvuiosly I can't know the details for your receiver, but you should just be able to add a new satellite if you have not got 26E, then manually add the transponders.

I can't confirm FTA right now, but I will have a look later tonight.
