hello all,
I am trying to set up a linkstar modem and am having trouble trying to telnet. my ethernet address on back of modem is 00.A0.94.01.3B.7F. when i try to use the windows scientific calc to get the IP out of this it gives me and IP address of 10.1.80.767. this does not sound correct. so i went to an online application and got the address of 10.0.59.127. with a mask of 255.255.255.240. however when i try to ping this it comes back with <1ms. also, when i try to telnet it it says something about a port 23 not being the right port i am stumped on what to do here. i know my IP has to be different than the modem IP (i think) and they have to be ibn a certain range... could anyone please try to give me something to work with... thank you very much in advance.

Is this a cable modem or a broadband via satellite system?
00.A0.94.01.3B.7F is much more likely to be the MAC address of the item, not the ip address. The documentation which came with it should tell you what the preset ip address is.

The MAC address is really to identify the equipment internally on the network nothing else - you can ignore it.
The subnet mask on simple networks is normally 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0. Go to google, and put the exact make and model number into it - you should find a website where you can download the documentation. Most companies put their manuals on line these days. You also need to look at the website of the sat internet company you are planning to use - there will be the information on there you need to configure the modem correctly - if they use specific settings we will never be able to get it set up by guesswork. One thing you could try - ping 192.168.0.1 - thats a common setting for routers.

Ahah - just remembered another networking trick - assumingh you are running later than win 98.....
Start - run and put cmd into the run box. You will get a dos type box pop up type ipconfig/all into the command box, and you should get a list of everythhing connected. The top one should be the computer you are working on.

Hi AS, have you any explanation for the fact that I cannot get my vista to return any information about my configuration.
Vista tells me that it is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Those are the exact words vista uses. I can get my configuration from XP no problem, it is just this pain vista that will not give me anything. Very best regards Wez

Works fine with Vista Home premium.
I just typed cmd in the search box and in the DOS window typed ipconfig/all and got all the required information. |

Kerrywez,
If you did the "ipconfig/all" if will error, you actually need "ipconfig /all". You can always go for "ipconfig" which just gives details of your machine. Rich |
