Hi guys, i have been tweaking the elevation as well. The dish has a seemingly arbitrary scale marked heaven knows why!) from 30 to 90 degrees instead of real degrees in relation to the horizontal

I have now lost jjb channel. the programs i get mostly seem to be on Eurobird 1 though. I have just repositioned and scanned and got 25 channels including Islam, Music India, Pulse, Noor, Luxe and a load of encrypted program numbers

I realise there is probably an infinite number of positions, even along an arc, where i presume these satellites live and that some may be just above and some just below it, but by not much?

The dish scale is not meant to be arbitrary, it is supposed to be the angle from horizontal, i.e the elevation. It should go below 30 though, as that is around the top of the arc for many.

Trouble is the scales on the back of dishes can be inaccurate.

Yes the satellite do vary a very tiny bit from the arc, but it is only fractions 0.1 or 0.2 degrees or so normally. This is not something worry about at all with a normal sized dish.

Presumably you have seen this post:-

The satellite arc

Its a bit out of date, but it gives you the idea.
( I have drawn another but can't really post it on here)

Yes Robbo i have seen that diagram. I have just been out in the dark up the ladder (normal behaviour for satellite enthusiasts i presume) and checked the elevation scale which is fairly meaningless but i have been on the correct elevation anyway, according to what they say, which corresponds with the real elevation i am using, as checked with a home made inclinometer. Wish you were here LOL!

I have had replies from Freecycle: one guy will lend me a receiver so long as i go and see if i can set his system up with my meter and another guy is threatening to lend me a receiver, if i ever hear back from him that is. It would be interesting to see if i could set another one up anyway, so i could find out if that is more or less difficult than the job i have here. Cheers. John.

It is really good to gain some experience, then you know what you're doing.
Once you have done it a few times it gets easier. I tend to get a bit blaze (spelling?) about it now.

The first dish I moved was my Sky minidish, I swivelled it from 28E to 19E for some spanish channels, the smaller the dish, the easier it is.

Hi John, Just go for it mate, you can't bu&&er up something that is not set up anyway, so what harm can you do?

I would just ask you if you have considered the declination for your location? Go here and download the software and you will have a very good idea of what you need to do >>>>>>http://www.al-soft.com/saa/satinfo.shtml<<<<<< You can use the software here to great advantage and it will give you exactly what you need to do and what angles you need.

Very best regards Wez

Hi John, If you are getting a strong signal from ne transponder on Hotbird I would try them all, just to be sure that you are really on Hotbird, just do a scan of Hotbird to see if you are really getting all the Hotbird transponders, because some of them might be quite close to the frequencies on Astra2.

If you find that you are indeed on Hotbird you will need to shift your dish by 13.2 degrees (Hotbird is 15E Astra 28.2E so the difference is 13.2). I really hope you are on Hotbird, but you got to try it first before you move anything. I am not sure, but I have never heard of LuxTV on Astra2, but I might well be wrong, I only watch astra2 for the BBC and ITV, Ch4, Five and Sly three.

Good luck and best wishes with it, you deserve a bit of a break, keep at it and it will be worth it in the long run and you can then go fix it if it goes belly up, which it will sooner or later; see the posts about that damn wind and the storm arriving.

Just had a look and there are no transponders, near the one you have a good signal from, on any of the birds at 28.2, so I should think you are on Hotbird OK. You need to realize that even when you move the dish to 28.2E you will still have to adjust the elevation when you get there, because if you are getting a very strong signal from Hotbird on one or more of it's transponders, then you must have the dish set up as far as elevation goes, for Hotbird. It would follow that if the elevation is dead on for Hotbird then it is not for Astra2.

Very best regards Wez

Thanks Wez,

I find it hard to think i am so far out with my degrees but it is difficult with a compass that alters when you put it near the dish or when it is near the house in some places. I think i got it about right and i marked my angles on the ground in chalk so i could get a line of sight from above the lnb arm to the lines on the ground - but i could have got it wrong though!!

I scanned for Hotbird and the 2 transponders it picked up on are 11681 and 12635

There was Islam, God Europe, Peace, Al Jaz English, TBN Europe, Hollywood, God, Friendly TV, Pulse, Noor, Pitchgaming 2, Luxe, LuxeHD, Music India, Program 54202 and Program 54201

I have now moved the dish some 13 degrees east and down a bit until the meter seemed to hit on a satellite and i scanned for Astra but got nothing - just done a multisat scan and got zilch - will try again tomorrow after work

Hi John, I am very sorry to have to tell you that those channels were on Eurobird1. If you like to follow this link you will find King if Sat and there you can search for any channel and it will return what satellites it is on, so it will be handy for you to look up what you are receiving from where >>>>>>> Channel Search - KingOfSat <<<<<<<

At least you can now see where the channels are coming from and it will allow you to get a much better idea of what satellite you are on.

Whatever you do keep working and I know you will get there, you are probably sitting there thinking that basket can talk, but you will get there. We have, each and every one of us, been where you are now and we are now able to set up almost anything, practice makes perfect and you are learning a very great deal without knowing it, and you are getting better as you go along.

Keep at it mate it will all seems like a dream when you get it sorted.

Forgive me for any typos as I am watching a girl getting her teeth pulled without anything other than hypnosis, sh*t he is now drilling her teeth, no BBC2.

Very best regards Wez

Those channel are definitely on 28E, including Luxe Tv.
