Buy a classic (Land Rover, Range Rover, whatever) today, free tax, and put the £400+ saved towards keeping it on the road (and maybe an LPG conversion if petrol)!

That emmisions thing seems very complicated, I'd have developed a formula where rim size determines the tax rate (wider rims and larger wheels/low profile tyres) likely to be on more polluting vehicles or driven more erratically.
Biggest rims on tractors!
Pay by the tyre - a worn-out tyre indicates more "use" of the highway - faster motorway driving, more aggressive acceleration/braking.

the road tax should be done away with and an amount should be put on fuel.the more you use the more you pay.it will do away with a lot of problems.all this clamping and removing your car then crushing it and so on. not sure but i think france does that.

Tell that to independent truckers and fishermen. Or anyone who has to do alot of driving to make a living. You would end up paying it indirectly anyway because the price of everything you buy will go up to cover transport costs. If you're not happy with road tax buy a diesel or smaller petrol car.

You are correct about France by the way. No road tax on cars but they have alot of toll charges etc. And decent public transport alternatives. Also hauliers etc get discounted fuel prices.

i just got rid of two of them cos they were very poor on fuel economy. i agree though that it is a better way of missing the tax. anything pre 1973 is tax free but not often very economical.

i drive a 1997 525 and ive just opened my tax reminder.................... no change still £185 a year, still very reliable, still very comfortable i think i'll keep it for ever
