4Alternative fuel car discounts: 2009/10 £20 bands A - I, £15 bands J - M; 2010/11 £10 all cars

I don't know about you but I was absolutely livid when I found out about this

As an example, a 2002 Vectra 1.8LS is currently in band E paying £170 a year. From next March it will be moved to band J, paying a whopping £260, a rise of £90! Other examples in this band would be a 2002 Mondeo 1.8LX, Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.8, 2004 Focus 1.8LX (not Zetec), 98-04 Astra 1.8LX, non of which you would exactly call a gas guzzler, which is what the Government claim to be aiming these tax hikes at

Notice how the bands have been adjusted so that these popular family cars now come in just outside the threshold for the new band 'I' (Mondeo is 182g/km, Vectra 183g/km). Another example of the working man getting well and truly shafted by the taxman

These are only a few quick examples that I managed to find, I'm sure their are plenty more nasty shocks waiting for the unsuspecting motorist!

I have a renault Clio in band B, so that will save a tiny bit, but I also have a Picasso,

Good for him - keep cranking up those upper 3 or 4 tax bands for the most polluting cars - if you can afford to run those biguns then you can afford the tax hikes.

Why are the Mondeos so high? Are they crap engines?

My Rover 2.5 V6 is £185 for 2008/9 and 2009/10 and £200 the following year.

Don't know Jim, the few Rover 2.5 V6's I checked were at least 229g/km, putting them in the new band 'L' (£430) according to Parker's guide

i worked my a### off since leaving school in 1979.i have treated my self to nice 525 diesel bmw.i dont agree with the thing if you can afford to buy it you should be made to more tax for it.mine goes up to £300 this year.its just an excuse about the environment. its another way that the gov has found to make money out of the moterist.if they want us to use public transport then make it free. why should our right be taken away from using our own cars.well that felt a little better but now to start saving for the new tax.

I agree with you, but its more of case of you work hard today, get yourself a good well paid job, and then are penalised for making a success of yourself and treating yourself to more luxurious items

I Only drive a fiesta and would love to drive something like a BMW in the future, but i'll just be taxed to the bare bone so puts me of, I don't want to give more money to this ridiculous government, as for been charged £400 for a mondeo, well thats just scandalous

As for public transport, I worked in Coventry last year, and when I get the train up there now i have to pay a £10 return from Lichfield, a 30 mile journey that takes 50 mins on average in the car yet takes 1:30 on the train, again no incentive for me to use it as the service is pathetic, crappy carriages, and more often than not people are standing at peak times as they cannot get a seat

Very narrow minded point of view, guess you can't afford a nice "biggun" as you like to put it
