In most of the UK a 60cm dish (including Zone 2 Sky dish - and even the mini-dish) is good enough for Hotbird and a 'Universal' LNB will do. As for receiver any regular satellite receiver will receive the free channels on Hotbird; some recommendable receivers include the Technomate 1000 or 5000 series.

All the Iranian and Farsi language channels on 13E are transmitted in the clear so any digital receiver can be used for them.
Id stay away from Fortec Betas - patch software support seems to have dried up for them. However having said that theres not much open on 13E on patches anyway at the moment - TPS is the main one but they are disappearing soon.

Yes, the dish and LNB from Maplin would do the job for Hotbird, as the signal is strong. They are not the cheapest though, but good because you don't have to pay for shipping if you pick up in person.
If you wanted a patchable receiver avoid the Forec stars, and go for something like a Technomate 5200 or similar, or maybe a Darkbox. I think southersatellite was doing a complete motorised system for £100 recently, with the Darkbox.
