Sky Italia plans sports news




Sky Italia, the digital-satellite pay-TV operator fully owned by Rup*ert Murdoch's News Corporation, is planning the launch of a sports news channel.

Branded as Sky Sport News, the channel will be hosted in the 500 channel-prefix news block on Sky Italia’s EPG, together with other current affairs and news channels such as Sky News 24, Rai News and others. Launch is set for prior to this summer’s 2008 Beijing Olympics, an event for which the TV rights have been acquired by the Italian pay-TV operator.

As far as programming is concerned, the channel will have an hourly news block with sport events highlights, talk shows and TV magazine programs during the weekdays. It will also have extensive usage of the exclusive TV rights acquired by Sky Italia, including the Italian football tournaments, Champions’ League football, first division national basketball and volleyball championships and Formula 1 racing.
