Default Petition

I have set up a petition requesting that the government encrypt all British Digital television channels, both satellite and terrestrial.

_http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Encrypt/

The main reason for this is to help protect young children from viewing offensive and inappropriate material in television programmes and advertisements.

With the proliferation of channels, and adult oriented shows, like Soap Operas, being shown on numerous channels and at various times, even during the weekend, it is becoming almost impossible for parents to protect their children from viewing unsavoury material.

Hopefully the encryption of the digital channels will help parents to monitor their children’s viewing.

It should not affect any adults viewing options but will give parents a greater amount of control over what their children view.

It should not cost any Television Licence payer any extra money and could provide viewers with more choice following the 2012 Analogue switch off.

The technology is already in place to allow this, and now that we are going digital parents should be given the option to protect their children from adult programming, and adverts, currently being shown every day on all British digital television channels.

With great improvements in technology children will soon be able to view television on hand held computers and even mobile telephones.

This could also have other advantages, and should provide viewers with greater options and flexibility in what they view and how they pay for television in future.

Following the Analogue switch off in 2012 viewers should be given the choice if they wish to continue to finance the BBC.

Viewers will have the option of choosing which television channels they wish to pay for, and can add/remove channels with a telephone call, using their computer or interactively using the new digital technology.

There will be no more need for Television licence detector vans as if you do not pay you can not view the channels.

I would be very grateful if UK members, who agree with this proposal, can please sign my petition and publicise it on other forums, chat rooms, and anywhere else you can think of.

I dont think so.

What it actually needs is the re-introduction of proper programme censorship with producers and directors being prosecuted for any programmes that are transmitted without an approved certificate. Bring back Mary Whitehouse.

Unfortunately the media industry is unable to regulate itself.

You could censor the Gay kiss scene in a TV soap, but the kids aren't interested anyway - they're off killing the Ho's on Grand Theft Auto

Murdoch would love all programmes to be encrypted, not a chance.
Mind you some one in Zimbarbweewee might need a job and hes an expert at encryption.

Sorry dead in the water.

censorship is wrong, it stops freedom of chose. There is a little known device to stop anyone viewing offencive material, its called the off button. There is also a specialist device to stop children watching un appropriate material, its called parenting, something sadly lacking in the world today.

Well said Madrat.

Although proper adult material should always be encrypted I believe.

At the moment we do have very censored programmes and a lot of the censorship is confused and doesn't make sense.
For example over the weekend was the film Overboard, the last time I saw this film on British television, a while ago, it was censored because Goldie Hawn wears a skimpy swim suit that shows her backside, yet during the commercial break there was an advert with a fully naked man advertising perfume.
Then we have comedies like Just Shoot Me heavily censored yet Soap Operas are allowed to show very adult themes on a Sunday Morning.
I would like parents to have the right to decide what is best for their children rather than these arbitrary watchdogs.
Equally as long as I am forced to pay for the television licence I would like to know why certain programmes are censored but others not.
Hopefully encryption can lead to adults being able to view needlessly uncensored programmes and children protected from material obviously intended for adults.

I think kids should be protected from adult material, in the early years, by their parents.
But as we here in this forum know, there are "ways round everything", to watch what we want to watch.
The problem is ,kids in early teens could outwit most of us as far as downloading, hacking, and porn watching is involved.

I personally think, children brought up in a stable home with both a mother and father [ rare these days] ,and taught right from wrong is the way to go. Censorship not sure

Perhaps I might ask a question or two.

Who will pay for this encryption

Will I have to buy a decoder out of my funds.

As I do not have children, yet pay all taxes, why should I be further taxed to suit others.

and finally, do parents really care anymore, Ok some do, others ,well breed to bleed the state.

My opinion
