Default One for Analoguesat

Heres one for you AS. Any idea why Astra are bunching up satellites at 31e

31.5°E Optus A3 (incl. 9.4°)

31.5°E Sirius 2

31.0°E Astra 1D (incl. 0.5°)

I'm thinking they have something up their sleeve

It is a crafty plot by the AMB (anti-murdock-brigade) who have infiltrated SES Betzdorf. When the time is right we will give sky an ultimatum. Turn off encription or stop transmitting adverts, otherwise we will crash these satellites into the cluster at 28east.
We are fed up with paying twice for our entertainment from sky.

I would guess it could be a new feed hot-spot. The inclined orbit satellites aren't much good for DTH, but often used for cheap OB feeds

Only just seen this one - it was posted when I was off on holiday

Optus A3 can only have been placed at 31.5E to "activate" that slot - all slot reservations with the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) are forfeited after a certain length of time (several years) and are allowed to be registered by other companies or countries. Therefore it is vitally important for companies that have reservations dure to lapse that they get a satellite in place. It doesnt have to be an active bird. My guess is that the Aussies haddnt got any further use for a 20 year old satellite, so SES got hold of it for peanuts and held onto 31.5E with it for a couple of years.

Its important for the big players to get reservations active in the skies above Europe as the airwaves are getting crowded. 28E is about full, as is 19E and 13E. Hence SES have activated 23.5E and Eutelsat 9E.

I leave it to you to decide what SES have planned for 31.5E, but I will point out its its very close to 28E!

Orbital seperations:

9E to 13E = 4 degrees
19E to 23.5E = 4.5 degrees
28.2E to 31.5E = 3.3 degrees

Coincidence? Maybe - maybe not....

BTW - now SES have a decent satellite (Sirius 2) at 31.5E, Optus A3 has been sent to junk orbit
