Default beginner question - watching french tv in london ?

Hello, i am completely new to satellite tv, sorry if i am asking stupid questions!

i live in london UK, I have sky tv installed already, and i would like to receive french tv channels like tf1 france2 etc + some rfo channels if possible, eg rfo polynesie and rfo tempo

i am considering going for the tnt sat package here. TNTSAT French Freeview System

now my questions:

- why doesnt everyone go for a motorised system , as it seems to me that if you want extra channels, all you do is point the satellite in a different direction , and job done ? is it because it is vastly more expensive ? or more complicated ?

the idea is that if it is not too much extra money, i would ask them to install a motorised system so i can get more channels

- in the package above can i specify fr3 paris rather than some other region ?

- can i get these satellites, as they have the rfo channels which i woudl like to watch ?
Atlantic Bird 3 at 5.0°W - LyngSat
Intelsat 701 at 180.0°E - LyngSat

thanks !

Seems rather expensive just to recieve French free channels or otherwise. Why not have read of the sticky at the top of the page 'Where do I start?' and get your own reciever and dish and get all the channels available via satellite.

Hi get yourself a motorised system this will get you more channels plus plenty of French ones, a motorised system can be had for just £150 then patch the receiver and if you need to get a subscription card to ABSat package or get the TNT card as it will be cheaper this way.

Welcome to the forum Alain

Atlantic bird 3 is an easy catch in the UK, you should be able to get it on a 60cm dish no problem at all. I have in the past managed to get it on a 43cm Sky minidish before now

The stuff on Intelsat 701 is impossible to get in the UK as its below the visable horizon of this country

With regards to the motorised dish it can be more expensive if you get an installer to do it for you. If you do it yourself you are probably talking about an extra £50-60 to pay for the motor and T & K brackets

Its definately a good idea to go motorised as you get a better pick of whats available. New stuff comes open every now & then to keep the hobbyist happy. There is talk on some forums that Irdeto and Seca will be the next encryptions to fall

At the moment you'll be pleased to know that TPS/Multivision on 13e is wide open on most patchable receivers. TPS/Multivision gives you a really good mix of French channels. Unfortunately this probably won't be around much past May as they are moving everything over to Astra 1 @19.2e after the merger with Canalsat
There is also Digi TV on 1w open aswell as Premiere 19.2e and Polsat on 13e

You will also find other stuff scattered around that most patchable receivers will open. There is also a lot of french FTA stuff on 5w which i'm sure you are aware of in both Analogue (SECAM) and Digital transmissions

Hope this has helped a little

Hi,

Yes a motorised dish is the best way, to add a budget Diseqc motor to a dish is very cheap, only £30 to £40. However the installation would cost a lot more than a fixed dish, unless you install yourself.

Intelsat 701 is impossible in the UK, it is right round the other side of the world. Roughly speaking and if you have an extremely good line of site you could possibly receive from satellites up to +- 70 degrees either side of due south. Outside that, they are below the horizon. Normally +- 45 degrees where such good line of site is not possible.

Cool Re: beginner question - watching french tv in london ?

thnak you very much for all the answers ! i have done some reading on this forum and i now understand what a patched receiver is ! (a normal receiver with free software downloaded from the internet so you can watch otherwise payable channels right ??)

i think the package is too expensive and will try and go motorised! stand by for more questions i am sure!

Correct.

But when selecting a receiver you would be better prepared if you get one with a card and CAM slot for an official subscription when the need arises.
