other than rust what do you look for in a mark one ! i am looking at a car at £2,200 today its a XL automatic L or M reg i think. the car has got 11 months mot and tax. from what i see on ebay these cars cost a premium even with a little rust on them. the guy has shown this car at events but offcourse i have to see it first.

The three door shells make silly money since they tend to get used as a doner for the sports / RS models and classic ralley cars.
The MkI is a nice simple car to maintain so mechanical stuff won't cause issues to sort, the expensive things seem to be trim items. The usual things to look out for are poorly repaired bodys & filler etc. |

The crossflow kent engines are reliable, but a bit noisy, tappets rattle a bit, dont over adjust trying to quieten them down, timing chain and adjuster noise is common, can be changed in situ, good mods are electronic ignition do away with points and condenser, weber 28-34 or 28-36 dcd carb and 4 branch exh, if it still has sealed beam headlights change to halogens, vast improvement but fit a relay between the switch or it will melt, you can uprate the alternator easily too, auto box can be changed to manual , change pedal box, flywheel ,prop,3 speed auto is more thirsty and saps power, unless you prefer auto, back axles sound like a tube train when diffs wear, rear brakes are manualy adjusted, often neglected.
