I'll keep looking and will let you know if there is any success.

Ain't I glad I know how to manually change keys. I can see the frustration of searching for something when its so much easier to ask.....

I bought a USB to serial connector to attach my null modem cable to- from maplins
once I connect it to the vox XP auto assigns port 11

to remedy this I go to device manager click on the device I can reassign com port 3 to it

this enables the firmware to download to the vox

don't know if this will be of any help

Thanx again lads. I tried all the techniques, generic drivers for the USB cable etc etc but no luck. Think its defo a cable issue at this stage. I'll try it out on an other computer during the week. Let there be no panic.

I'll use this as an opportunity to watch a bit of telly before I get to practise fastest finger in the west again.....

Maplin > USB to Serial 9-Pin Male Adaptor

This seems a good converter wizweb. While it is rather expensive the faqs for the product state that it works with vista and it comes with a c d with the drivers on. You can also download the drivers off the maplins website. I am guessing you are using windows vista as this is what seems to cause the majority of problems when using a usb to serial converter.

Cheers Korn31. Should have said I'm using XP Pro. Don't worry about it lads and thanx again for all the contributions.

A few more key changes will motivate me to sort me wiring!

Going back to my telly.
