What's the significance of the null modem cable? I bought a standard RS232 serial cable but it doesn't connect to the starview box. Have i got the wrong cable?

If it's a RS232 female to female cable it's the correct one.

Its a standard serial cable with a male at one end and a female at the other. I had to buy a gender bender to convert the male end to female.

Sounds like you need to change the ports. Mine on pc and laptop only worked on Port 2.
I had these problems be4.

Good luck
