Default Any user update boxes from a laptop?

Ok,
i put this thread in here cos i have a eurovox m'kay, but it can obviously pertain to anyone with any box that requires connection via null modem cables.
Does anybody use a laptop that DOES NOT have a serial port to update their firmware?
If so, what do you use?
I've heard the serial>USB cable are garbage and cause too many problems.
PCMCIA serial cards cost a fortune.
The 4 pc's i have in the home don't have serial port, cos lets face it, what new technology uses serial nowadays? God knows why cables boxes do!
Any recommendations please?

Thanks

Hi,
Not sure what the cable is called, I took the null modem cable into shop and asked for cable and fitting to connect it with usb.
Installed drivers and it worked fine.
PM me if you need drivers for xp

I use a laptop with Vista Ultimate installed with a Null modem cable & a Serial to USB adapter........contact Lincsat for cable etc. You WILL need a Vista driver for the adapter, but its not hard to find.

Hi

Although I didnt use a laptop I have updated 3 Max v's using Vista with a USB to Serial adapter and all went very smoothly. I installed the drivers off the supplied disk with the adapter but when PC rebooted Vista searched and installed drivers from the internet.

Oooh...oooh...oooh.... a question. and probably a daft one, but;
Does the eurovox need to be 'in situ' to be updated?
i.e. could i unplug it from the coax feed and move and plug it in near my pc, or does it need to be fully plumbed in with coax to be able to update successfully?
