From Nano's reply to my post here I got the impression that, if I got a Dreambox and a £20 Sly Freesat card, I'd at least be able to view Channel 4 and Five - but when I phoned Sly to activate the card, I was told it could only be used with a Sly box.

Did I add 2+2 and come to 5?

S*y aren't likely to tell you that their cards work in other technology, especially as they don't like it.
For speaking to the enemy (S*y) you should be shot

Ask other Dreambox owners they are more likely to provide decent advice rather than S*y.

Sky are talking rubish mate. you can use your freesat card in a dreambox. What you have to be careful about is whether or not it allows updates. I think most modern cams now do. I have a tm9100 and use hypercam to watch sky when I use my card in that box. Gbox runs skycards and so does ccamd with newcs. Most allow updates these days.

Did they activate your card when you told them??

The card has to be ACTIVATED in a digibox. After that it will run quite happily in linux boxes or some of the new cams

To be honest, I can't remember if the girl said "can't be used" or "can't be activated" without a Sly box - probably the latter, but no, the card was not activated.

Now I understand a bit more from your posts above, I'll activate the card through my neighbour's digibox. Then I'll need to use something like Gbox, which I believe is some software that I need to run on my PC to communicate with the DB, to use the card - right?

Oh and just to throw a spanner in the works, The box I have is not a Dreambox, but was purchased new from eBay as a "Dreambox direct competitor", i.e. it isn't badged as and doesn't claim to be Dreambox but it does claim to run exactly the same as a Dreambox 500-S and run the same software etc. Is this likely to be a problem, as I have since noticed a couple of negative posts about DB clones.

Well for starters DONT load any of the later Gemini images onto it!

Install the latest CCCam and it will run the card happily.

Be aware there are some rumours of a card swap at some point kill off the emulators in non sky boxes although nothing is confirmed atm.

Borrowed the neighbours digibox and got the card activated after being subjected to what amounted to an inquisition - they wanted the card number (read from the on screen system details), the box manufacturer, serial number and some other detail.
