In a nutshell no. You would need to change everything bar the dvd and possibly the HD's. Quad cores use a lot of power too, I opted for a fast Duo as the price/performance for a quad wasn't worth it.

As a lot of Dell's use proprietary cases etc, you would be far better off building one from scratch.

i945G/P

CPU Pentium D 840 at 3.2GHz LG775
(
945 doesn't support is dual-core Hyper-Threaded processors)
and maybe 2x 1Gb sticks dual channel ram (667Mhz at most)

Those are by far the best upgrades you can do boost performance to some degree and very cheap BUT tbh keep some pld parts and build new, as spangle mentioned.

No, you would still need to replace everything the same as a quad core.

I've been looking to upgrade recently, been looking at core 2 duo but it seems a bit of a minefield!

Basically, whats the difference between a core duo and a core 2 duo, is it just the amount of cache?

I've been an amd bod a for such a long time and am debating whether to stay with them or move to intel although the prices seem to be much higher..

any suggestions would be much appreciated

core duo aka hyperthread is one single processor that is "split" in two to have two virtual cores. core 2 duo is two actual cores - which is better, but usually more energy consumption. i have a 3.2ghz core duo 1gb ram and built-in video 96mb video on the asus motherboard (a p5-pve or something like that) - it serves me well enough, even with heavy photoshopping and some sony vegas video editing.

That's the frustrating thing with PCs.....they make them modular and tell you it's upgradeable but when you try after more than, say 6 months, you find the cpu mounting has changed on the newer models so that you also need a new motherboard. Then DDR has become DDR2 so the old memory won't fit the new MB. Your old graphics card was AGP and the new ones are PCIe and so it goes on. If you're lucky you can reuse the case and PSU and CD/DVD
