Default 1 meter dish site to install question

Hello, I am about to install a 1 m dish for home satellite. I was just about to go ahead and bolt it to the wall however I am wondering what are the factors I should consider with regards to wind, not mine, but nature. It's a solid dish which i was going to bolt roughly 8 ft up on a wall at the back of the house, which is reasonably sheltered from strong winds, when they come. SHould I abandon this idea and install it at floor level? as i have seen some large dishes secured to a level surface at other properties? Ultimatley I dont want to have the dish take part of the wall with it as the mounting pole is very strong, if there should be a gale? I'm sorry but i'm not scientifcally minded enough to understand wind loading equations. thanks in advance.

Hi,
It really depends on how strong the wall is, and how close to the top layer of bricks you put the bracket.

I would say put it as low as you can stand and still get enough of the arc.

Alternatively you could concrete the pole into the ground, to reduce the risk.

I have a 110cm dish, the motor is currently mounted at approx 5-6ft off the ground, with the pole concreted into the ground and it has been fine.

Robbo

Hi mate,
I would suggest that you should make the dish motorised, which is what Robbo was hinting at when he mentioned about the arc. It is not that difficult to do and will not cost that much more than a stationary dish installation, but you will have a vast array of channels and satellites. Please do consider making your dish a motorised installation, because you will have a better experience and will thank us in the end.

With the dish at a level where you can work at it standing beside it, as Robbo suggests, will make working at it very easy, and you will in all likelihood need to work at it some time, be it stationary or motorised.

Very best regards Wez

Thanks guys, as it happens the dish will be motorised. Do you think that if a gust of wind was strong enough then the first thing to give would be the clamp of the motorised arm? The pole idea is interesting, I could concrete one into the ground. Otherwise it will be attached to the wall about 8ft up, 6ft below the roofline.
Thanks again
FP

Hi mate,
If you do go for the pole in the ground, please remember that it need to be exactly vertical on every plane, what I am saying is that if you do not get it right then when the concrete sets your pole will be useless to you for a motorised dish. You can always re-set the pole if it is on brackets but you have no chance if it is in concrete. If you go down the road of the pole concreted into the ground you would also be better to fill the ploe with concrete, because this gives you a much firmer pole.

Is there a reason why you can't have it lower down?

I would not worry overly about the wind, my small dish, 90Cms, is on the wall and it has moved, but only round the pole clamps.

Very best regards Wez
